Lyn asked some of her classmates how many people are normally at home for dinner. She recorded her results in the histogram shown at right.

  1. How many classmates were surveyed?

The vertical axis shows how many people responded for each bar.

  2. How many classmates have eight or nine people at home for dinner?

Which bar shows eight or nine people at home for dinner?

Same histogram as problem with an arrow pointing at the last bar.

The vertical axis reading for the bar is 1, so in other words, one classmate has eight or nine people at home for dinner.

  3. Can you tell which is the most common number of people at home for dinner? Why or why not?

Each stack represents more than one number of people home for dinner.

For this reason, you cannot know which is the most common number of people home for dinner.

A histogram labeled, Number of people at dinner, on the horizontal axis, scaled in equal segments of 2, from 0 to 10. Number of responses, is labeled on the vertical axis, scaled by ones, from 0 to 6. Starting at the left each segment has the following bar heights: 2, 3, 5, 5, 1, 0.
