Solve the following equations using any method. Show your work and check your solution.

1. $2x+16=5x+4$

Subtract $2x$ from both sides to move the variable onto one side of the equation.

$\begin{array}{l} \; \; \, 2x+16=5x+4\\ -2x\qquad \; -2x\\ \qquad \quad 16=3x+4 \end{array}$
Isolate the variable by subtracting $4$ from both sides.

$\begin{array}{l} \; 16=3x+4\\ -4\qquad \ \ -4\\ \;12=3x \end{array}$
Finally, divide both sides by $3$.

$x=\frac{12}{3}=4$

1. $3x-5=2x+14$

Follow the method presented in part (a).

$x=19$

Substitute $19$ back into the equation.$3(19)-5=2(19)+14$

Simplify.
$\begin{array}{l} 57-5=38+14\\ \quad \; \; \, 52=52 \end{array}$

If both sides of the equation are equal, your answer is correct.

1. $5x-5=x+15$
