3-8.

Find the distance between each pair of points if they were graphed on a number line. Represent your work using absolute value symbols. Homework Help ✎

1. $-27.1$ and $53.2$

Think of the absolute value of an integer as its distance away from $0$ on the number line, so it is always positive.

$|-27.1|=27.1$

Because the distance away from $0$ is $27.1$$27.1$, and because the absolute value of $53.2$ is $53.2$ , you can add the absolute values to get the distance between them.

$|-27.1|+|53.2|=27.1+53.2$

$80.3$

1. $71.54$ and $−28.3$

Use the same method as part (a).

$99.84$

1. $-38.9$ and $-7.3$

This time, the numbers are on the same side of $0$ . How will this change how you find the distance?
