7-113.

Ruthie did a survey among her classmates comparing the time spent playing video games to the time spent studying. The scatterplot of her data is shown at right.

  1. What association can you make from her data?

The person who played video games for 160 minutes studied for less than 20 minutes. The person who did not play any video games studied for 60 minutes.

There is a moderate, negative, linear association.

  2. Use an ordered pair () to identify any outliers.

The person who played video games for about 100 minutes studied much longer than those who played about the same number of minutes.

First quadrant scatterplot. X axis, labeled, Time Spent Playing Video Games in minutes. Y, axis, labeled, Time spent studying in minutes. The points are approximately: (20, comma 100), (40, comma 60), (55, comma 65), (80, comma 40), (100, comma 140), (120, comma 5), (120, comma 60), (140, comma 20), and (160, comma 10).
