4-97.

Determine the coordinates of each point of intersection without graphing.

1. $y = −x + 8$

$y = x − 2$

1. $y = −3x$

$y = −4x + 2$

Use the Equal Values Method.

Substitute your answer for $x$ back into one of the original equations to find $y$.

$\left(5, 3\right)$

$y = y$
$−x + 8 = x − 2$

$−x + 8 = x − 2$
$+2 +2$

$−x + 10 = x$
$+x +x$

$10 = 2x$

$5 = x$

$y = −x + 8$
$y = −\left(5\right) + 8$
$y = 3$

Follow the steps outlined in part (a).

$\left(2, −6\right)$
